Our 6th grade green band science students recently learned why and how engineers take core samples of our earth by participating in our Cupcake Geology Lab. Mrs. Kolk’s team of geologists mapped out and pulled 5 core samples from their cupcake earth, and from the patterns in those samples made a prediction about what the cross-section of their earth would look like. It was a deliciously informative day in science!
The green band participated in a hands-on science lab provided by Algalita, a local non-profit organization with the mission of creating a plastic pollution-free future. Our students were asked to consider designing solutions to the problem of plastic pollution as well as ways to create awareness. They were also asked to define their relationships with plastic and then redefine them by redesigning the plastic items we use, reducing, reusing and recycling. Some ideas were to s
